“We designed a building that really feels like home for the students, but that simultaneously opens to and engages with the community,” — Jeanne Gang, FAIA, Founding Principal, Studio Gang Architects

Communities of Learning
The internationally renowned firms Studio Gang Architects and Mortenson Construction designed and built a major new residential commons on the north end of the University of Chicago campus. The facility is tailored to the College’s distinctive House system, which emphasizes building communities of learning. “This facility creates an elegant and welcoming new home for students and an important resource for our community,” said John W. Boyer, dean of the College. “The College is stronger when students can live and learn in communities that foster curiosity and intellectual conversations and serve as foundations for lifelong friendships.”

Neighborhood Gateway
The graceful new entrance from 55th St. and University Ave. connects the University to the Hyde Park community to the north, serving as a new gateway to the neighborhood. In addition to bringing the campus and the neighborhood together, the entrance also enhances pedestrian flow, encouraging greater foot traffic.
